Teaching & Supporting International Students

International students bring diversity, fresh perspectives, and unique challenges to our classrooms. But how well do we really understand their backgrounds, motivations, and learning experiences? Join our panelists, Drs. Elham Buxton, Sevilay Onal, and Te-Wei Wang for an insightful faculty training where they will explore:

Who are the international students in our classes? (Where they come from, their backgrounds, age, and prior institutions)
Why do they choose the U.S. and UIS specifically?
What factors impact their academic success and satisfaction?
What strategies can faculty use to enhance their learning experience?
What challenges arise when teaching or advising international students?
How can we create a more inclusive and supportive classroom environment?

This interactive session is an opportunity to share experiences, discuss common challenges, and learn practical strategies to support our diverse student population.

Overview:

The Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE)Faculty Associate will be a tenured or tenure-track UIS faculty member. The Faculty Associate will be responsible for working with all faculty across the university. The goal of CFE is to support faculty in their efforts to become more effective teachers and to promote their efforts toward academic advancement. The CFE Faculty Associate will collaborate with leadership of OPEL, COLRS, and the CFE Advisory Board to assist faculty in developing the knowledge and skills needed to attain and maintain excellence in teaching including teaching strategies, assessment and evaluation, and opportunities to participate in the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Benefits:

One course NIA each for Fall and Spring semesters.
Summer stipend (can begin summer 2025 or 2026 depending on associate availability)
Potential for travel funds to support growth as a leader in faculty development.
Initial 1 year term (Summer 2025 through Spring 2026), renewal annually thereafter.
The faculty associate will report directly to the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs
There will be formal review each year to give the faculty associate feedback.
The CFE Faculty Associates are supported by a graduate assistant.

Responsibilities:

Design, implement, and deliver faculty development programs across the campus in collaboration with the Provost’s office, Deans, Faculty Development Advisory Board, and others. 45%
Establish and monitor communities of practice related to the teaching mission of the university as needed. This includes mentoring Campus Fellows with focus on teaching and learning environments 15%
Serve as a resource to university committees that address excellence in teaching. 10%
Help coordinate the Central and Southern Illinois Faculty Development Network (working with colleagues from other 4-year institutions and community colleges) 10%
Keep current with the literature and best practices at peer institutions, including occasional travel to conferences. 10%
Work with department chairs/heads, associate deans, and others to identify resources for enhancing faculty development programming. 5%
Collect, analyze, and report data on faculty development at UIS. 5%

Required qualifications:

Current full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty appointment at UIS.
Exemplary record of achievement in teaching and/or mentorship with a leadership style that promotes inclusion of all faculty.

Preferred qualifications:

Experience in leading faculty development and strategic planning initiatives that enhance faculty success
Proven experience in developing faculty development programs focused on teaching and learning
2 years of active involvement in faculty development activities
Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills
