In the Student Union Central Ballroom on April 11th at 1:30 the university will host the Outstanding Master's Thesis Awardee Presentation. This event honors the graduate student who won the award for the outstanding master's thesis in 2023-24 (last year). They will usually discuss their thesis for about fifteen to twenty minutes after they receive their award.

Following the outstanding master's thesis award, at about 2:00, the university holds the 2025 faculty mentor awards. This event takes about fifteen to thirty minutes, and is followed by the students awards—the awards for the best presentations, posters, and art shared at the STARS event. The schedule is 1:30pm for the outstanding master's thesis award; 2:00pm for the 2025 faculty mentor awards; and 2:30 for the student awards. In recent years these award ceremonies have been briefer than expected, and we have usually concluded all the awards by 2:30.

Keynote Speaker is Dr. Aleksander Ksiazkiewicz, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Sleepy Citizenship: The Biopolitics of Rest in American Democracy

Sleep inequality is a persistent problem in the United States. Over a third of American adults do not get sufficient sleep and that proportion is higher among members of marginalized groups. We argue that this disparity is consequential for the health of our democracy because sleep is an essential resource in political life akin to money, time, and civic skills. As such, we argue that promoting adequate sleep is a national imperative not only for health, educational, and economic reasons but also as a necessary condition of an active civic and political life—exhausted citizens are in a poor position to exert the effort needed to engage in politics and may be more susceptible to biases in their reasoning.

Event will be held in the Central Ballroom of the Student Union as part of the STARS event on Friday, April 11th, from 12:30 to 1:30. The speech will be given during the Luncheon for students and faculty who have presented in the Student Technology, Arts, and Research Symposium, but anyone is welcome to enter the ballroom to hear the keynote speech. The speech will also be live cast online for the wider UIS community.

From 11:00am to 12:30pm on Friday, April 11th students from UIS will present posters of their research or specimens of their art work and meet with visitors to the Student Technology, Arts, and Research Symposium. The poster and art exhibition takes place just outside the main central ballroom in the UIS Student Union.

The Posters & Art exhibition is followed at 12:30pm by a luncheon and keynote speech by Dr. Aleksander Ksiazkiewicz "Sleepy Citizenship: The Biopolitics of rest in American democracy". Persons who have registered in advance for the STARS symposium (mainly students presenting their work and their faculty sponsors) attend the luncheon and keynote speaker.

At 1:30pm, the university will present the Outstanding Master's Thesis Award

Following that, at approximately 2:00pm, the university will proudly present the 2025 Faculty Mentor Awards

Following that, at approximately 2:30pm, the STARS Committee will present awards to students for best oral presentation, best poster presentation, best art piece, and so forth.

Students will present their research on Friday morning, April 11th, between 8:30 and 11:00am. The north and south sections of the main ballroom will be portioned off so that there will be four presentation rooms (two on the north side, and two on the south side of the main ballroom in the Student Union). A detailed schedule of presentations will be available so that students and audiences will know where and when each presentation is scheduled.

Preceding the oral presentations in the Student Union on Friday morning, there will be online presentations on Thursday evening from 4:00 to 6:00pm; and following the oral presentations, STARS holds the posters and art exhibition from 11:00 to 12:30 on the landing outside the central ballroom in the Student Union.

At 2:30pm, in the central ballroom, there will be student awards for the best oral presentation, best poster presentation, best art piece, and et cetera.

On Thursday, April 10th, students will set up their posters and art work in the Student Union on the landing outside the Central Ballroom. The poster exhibition will be on Friday, April 11th from 11:00 to 12:30, but students should put up their work on Thursday so that the community will be able to admire and study their work before the exhibition time on Friday.
Live oral presentations are Friday from 8:30-11:00.
The Poster and Art Exhibition is on Friday from 11:00am to 12:30pm.
