Employee Tuition Waivers

Civil Service Employees of the University

An employee on a 100 percent time appointment is eligible to receive a waiver for a maximum of 11 credit hours per semester (i.e., Fall or Spring). An employee on a 50 percent to 99 percent time appointment is eligible to receive a waiver for a maximum of five credit hours per semester. During the summer session, tuition and fee waivers are reduced to 50 percent of the credit hours allowed for a semester.

The waiver includes tuition and all mandatory fees excluding Green Fee, Student to Student Fee and Student Insurance.

No form is required for approval. The waiver is automatically applied in the Banner system that houses employment and waiver data.

AP & Faculty Employees of the University

To be eligible for a tuition and fee waiver, you must hold an active appointment for no less than three-fourths of the academic term which is defined as 91 days in fall or spring or 41 days of summer term, and have an active appointment of 25 percent or more of full- time service. There is no credit limit.

The waiver includes tuition and all mandatory fees excluding Green Fee, Student to Student Fee and Student Insurance.

Retirees of the University

A retiree is eligible for up to 11 credit hours per semester (i.e., Fall or Spring). During the summer session, tuition and fee waivers are reduced to 50 percent of the credit hours allowed for a semester.

The waiver includes tuition and all mandatory fees excluding Green Fee, Student to Student Fee and Student Insurance.

Retirees who are interested in a waiver should contact their former human resources office to complete a form and receive an approval through HR. The approval will then be sent from UIS HR to UIS Financial aid for processing.

Inter-institutional Civil Service Employees

Eligible civil service employees from Illinois senior public universities who attend UIS are eligible for a tuition waiver covering up to six credit hours per standard semester (i.e., Fall or Spring). No fees are waived. During the summer session waivers are reduced to 50 percent of the credit hours allowed for a semester.

In-person FAFSA completion lab times: Receive assistance from financial aid professionals in UHB 2028 during the following dates and times.

Monday, Feb. 24 3-5 p.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 25 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 26 2-4 p.m.
Thursday, Feb. 27 12-2 p.m.
Friday, Feb. 28 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Students should bring their FSA ID and password and copies of 2023 taxes and other income information.

Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA)

This page is meant to provide students with resources for these outside programs. The Office of Financial Assistance at UIS does not determine eligibility or process any funding with the WIOA program.

WIOA was designed to help job seekers succeed in the local labor market and global economy. This is done by providing students with employment, education, training and support services.

Am I Eligible for WIOA?

One or more of the following student circumstances may qualify:

Income level
Laid off/ dislocated worker status
Veterans
Transitioning military members and spouses
Under-employed adults
Unemployed adults
SNAP and/or TANF assistance eligible individuals
Spouses or family members related to persons in eligible categories

Please note, the only guaranteed way to determine whether a student would qualify would be to contact the Illinois workNet.

For students who are looking into these programs, please visit the State of Illinois Workforce Portal.

For students who already participate in the program, University Bursar Sponsored Billing can be reached regarding the payments made to student accounts.

Illinois Graduate and Retain our Workforce (iGROW) Tech Scholarship Program

New scholarship introduced by Illinois for 2024-25!

The Illinois Graduate and Retain our Workforce (iGROW) Tech Scholarship Program provides scholarship assistance to Illinois students pursuing IT and related careers. The program was designed to recruit and retain individuals to work in technology jobs that have a high demand for new employees. This scholarship will be administered by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC). Eligible undergraduate students majoring in technology fields at the University of Illinois-Springfield may apply for up to $7,500 annually, applicable towards tuition & fees and room & board costs.

The 2024-25 iGROW Scholarship Program application is currently available online via the Program Applications & Status Checks area of the ISAC Student Portal. The grant requires that students sign an agreement pledging to work for one year at a qualified job in Illinois for each year of assistance they receive, for a minimum of two years. The priority application date for the 2024-25 academic year is November 30, 2024.
