When Dad feels like a little bit of Sunday afternoon time out, Bluey and Bingo have other plans! Join them as they pull out all of the games and cleverness at their disposal to get Dad off that bean bag. Bluey’s Big Play is a brand-new theatrical adaptation of the Emmy® award-winning children’s television series, with an original story by Bluey creator Joe Brumm, and new music by Bluey composer, Joff Bush. Join the Heelers in their first live theatre show made just for you, featuring brilliantly created puppets, this is Bluey as you’ve never seen it before, brought to real life. Bluey’s Big Play is presented by BBC Studios and Andrew Kay in association with Windmill Theatre Co.

Bluey’s Big Play run time is approximately 50 minutes.
There is no intermission.

International Education Week Presents Naghemeh Frazaneh: Screening & Artist Talk iszab2 Wed, 11/15/2023 - 12:18

Join the UIS Visual Arts Gallery for a screening and artist talk presented by Naghmeh Farzaneh, an Iranian filmmaker, art director, and animator based in Chicago. This event, held conjunction with International Education Week at UIS, is free and open to the public.

Naghmeh Farzaneh’s independent films have received international recognition and awards in festivals such as Animateka, Heartland, Chicago Children’s Film Festival, Tricky women, Farhang, New Orleans Film, and Oberhausen Film Festival. Her animated short, Scent of Geranium, was premiered by Vimeo Staff Pick and was selected as one of the ten best short films from 2017 by the National Geographic Short Film Showcase.

Over the last decade, Naghmeh has extensively collaborated with independent artists and filmmakers. She has held key roles as a director and art director for clients such as The New Yorker, Meow Wolf, Sesame Workshop, ACLU, TED-ED, and Onassis Foundation. In her latest collaboration, Naghmeh was the animation art director of the feature documentary In the Dark of the Valley, which received an Emmy nomination for outstanding Social Issue Documentary in 2022.

Naghmeh Farzaneh serves as an assistant professor at DePaul University, teaching animation.

UIS Visual Arts Gallery presents the 2023 silent auction and benefit both online and at the gallery

The University of Illinois Springfield Visual Arts Gallery annual silent auction and benefit will take place both online and in-person this year. The silent auction and benefit, featuring original works of art donated by local and regional artists, will launch online on Monday, Nov. 13, and remain live through final bidding at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7.

Works that are available online will be on display at the UIS Visual Arts Gallery Dec. 4- 7 for public viewing. A final bidding reception will take place at the gallery from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7. All bids must be placed through the auction website.

All proceeds from the annual auction support gallery programming throughout the year, supporting ambitious exhibitions by emerging and established artists, student exhibitions and educational programs.

The auction offers items in a variety of media, including painting, collage, ceramics, prints, glass and photography, among others. All featured items have been donated by artists and donors from the Springfield community and beyond.

As always, the UIS Visual Arts Gallery looks to the loyal community to champion its programs. Please visit the online auction to bid and visit the gallery to see the available works or donate directly to the gallery as a show of your support.

The University of Illinois Springfield Visual Arts Gallery is pleased to present Night Watch (Origin of the World), an exhibition of photography and drawings by St. Louis-based artist Heather Bennett. Night Watch (Origin of the World) will open Oct. 19 and run through Nov. 16. A reception for this exhibition will be held at the gallery from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19. In conjunction with this exhibition, the UIS Visual Arts Gallery will host a remote artist talk by Bennet at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2. Attendees can join via Zoom.

Night Watch (Origin of the World) addresses the question “How can we hold spectacle and depth together in one body?” through a collision of works that trace the female subject, traditionally stuck within invisibility -- though ironically, often a showpiece and endlessly gazed upon. In this work, the ever-present female body and the simultaneously unseen female subject are transformed towards a celebration of their irreconcilability, the sparkling beauty of the subject in its place among the shadows. Within this contradiction there is an underlying ecstatic freedom that cautiously steps over a precipice. There is a devastation present, as well as an effusive and elaborate beauty, which hints at a truth.

Bennett maintains a multimedia practice which consists of photography, video, drawing, text, sculpture, installation, as well as collaborations with musicians and writers. Her work traces the female subject and its historic irrelevance, focusing specifically on representation in contemporary culture. Bennett attempts to reveal an embodied subjecthood held within her protagonists. Pushing expectations of media, she disrupts assumptions, hoping to realign and reframe the relegated, feminine tinged space, to even recreate this space anew. Bennett has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, nationally and internationally. She is currently a senior lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis.

**The UIS Visual Arts Gallery presents A Public Commons, an exhibition by Service Works**

The University of Illinois Springfield Visual Arts Gallery is pleased to present A Public Commons, a project building on UIS' history of being an institution focused on openness, innovation and adaptability. The project recreates “the pit,” a popular 1970s Sangamon State University (now UIS) classroom known for its lack of desks and chairs. In this neutral space, people can explore effective communication and problem-solving from different viewpoints. A Public Commons opens Aug. 28 and runs through Oct. 5.

The space is open for public use and is designed to be reorganized according to the specific needs of each event. Individuals interested in occupying this space for productive discussions can reserve a time through a Google Form. The space is available from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday during the exhibition’s run.

A Public Commons is driven by Service Works, a unique platform that partners with a variety of people and institutions to provide access to socially relevant resources, opportunities and information through art and social design. This particular project is facilitated by artists Mike Miller, UIS associate professor of visual arts, and Brian Gillis, professor of art at the University of Oregon. They are working in partnership with Tiffani Saunders, Memorial Health equity diversity and inclusion consultant; Carol First, a nurse at Springfield Memorial Hospital; and Ty Dooley, interim director for the UIS School of Public Management and Policy.

In conjunction with this project, Miller and Gillis will present an Engaged Citizenship Common Experience (ECCE) Speaker Series lecture from 6 to 7 p.m. Sept. 13 in Brookens Auditorium, on the lower level of Brookens Library. The ECCE series is part of UIS’ undergraduate curriculum designed to foster an understanding of diversity, citizenship and issues of common concern. An exhibition reception for A Public Commons will immediately follow from 7 to 8 p.m. at the UIS Visual Arts Gallery. Both events are free and open to the public.

Additionally, A Public Commons will host four central convenings for discussions focused on social and cultural topics. These convenings are open to the public:

In this “barnburner of a play” (The Washington Post), two extraordinary women square off in a high-stakes academic debate over race, reputation and who gets the final word on how American history is written. When university professor Janine and her brilliant student Zoe don’t see eye to eye, their routine office hours discussion unexpectedly careens off course—and threatens to derail their careers, lives and the status quo.
