Hazing

UIS Hazing Policy:

Hazing, defined as an act which endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student, or which destroys or removes public or private property, for the purpose of initiation, admission into, affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in, a group or organization. The express or implied consent of the victim will not be a defense. Apathy or acquiescence in the presence of hazing are not neutral acts; they are violations of this rule.

Illinois Hazing Law:

(720 ILCS 5/12C-50)

Sec. 12C-50. Hazing.

(a) A person commits hazing when he or she knowingly requires the performance of any act by a student or other person in a school, college, university, or other educational institution of this State, for the purpose of induction or admission into any group, organization, or society associated or connected with that institution, if:

the act is not sanctioned or authorized by that educational institution; and

the act results in bodily harm to any person.

(b) Sentence. Hazing is a Class A misdemeanor, except that hazing that results in death or great bodily harm is a Class 4 felony.

How to report Hazing:

Hazing Transparency Reports:

In accordance with the Stop Campus Hazing Act, we are committed to maintaining transparency and accountability in our approach to addressing hazing incidents. These reports offer detailed insights into hazing cases reported to campus security authorities or local police, encompassing the nature of the incidents, the organizations involved, and the results of investigations. By sharing this information openly, we strive to raise awareness, enhance prevention efforts, and ensure the welfare of all students. Together, we can cultivate a campus environment that prioritizes safety, respect, and dignity for everyone.
