What are captions?

According to , 鈥渃aptions are a text version of the speech and non-speech audio information needed to understand the content.鈥 Captions differ from an audio transcript in that they are synchronized with the audio.

While some parts of the world use the terms 鈥渃aptions鈥 and 鈥渟ubtitles鈥 interchangeably, W3C provides differentiation between these terms as follows:

Digital Accessibility Tip: Alternative Text

What is Alternative Text?

Alternative text is a concise description of an image embedded within a webpage鈥檚 code. The description is read aloud to visually-impaired viewers using a screen reader. Its primary purpose is to provide context and meaning to users who cannot see the image. Alt text also provides a fallback in case the image fails to load and plays a role in search engine results.
