Trash and Waste Removal

Townhouses and Apartments

The Department of Residence Life contracts trash removal services with Waste Management of Illinois. Each court has an enclosed corral located near it where large waste receptacles (dumpsters) can be found.  Trash is collected by Waste Management two to three (2-3) times per week depending upon needs of the area. All trash from student residencies should be placed, not thrown, in these large dumpsters. All trash must be in securely closed trash bags. Trash is never to be left outside of the apartments unattended for any length of time.

Pest Control

The Basics

Pest control is not just the regular treatments that are provided by Department of Residence Life Facilities and our ORKIN vendor. The prevention of insects and rodents inside our living areas as well as keeping animals a safe distance outside our buildings is a responsibility for all of us.

To help reduce the nuisance complaints about pests and keep cost down, we recommend the follow for all areas:

Laundry

The Department of Residence Life areas have several washer and dryer machines located in each of the residential areas. Each Court has a designated laundry room as well as each floor in the residence halls.

All machines are free to operate and no money is required! You just need to select your cycle and press start. As the laundry is free there is no need to overload any machine in an attempt to save money.

Heating and Cooling

East Campus Living – Bluebell, Larkspur, Clover, and Sunflower

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems within the east side courts, reasonable limits are placed upon each unit. Despite being able to set some thermostats lower than sixty (60) and higher than ninety (90) degrees, the AC will not be able to cool past 65 degrees and the Heat will not be able to go above 75 degrees. Temperatures of the apartments may go past these restrictions if the outside temperature is lower or higher than the settings.

Cleanliness

A Happy Home

As the saying goes, “A Happy Home is A Healthy Home.”  Cleanliness contributes to a healthy home.  Students need to practice good cleanliness habits.  Similar to good hygiene by brushing teeth, showering and washing your hair, your residency needs attention too.  Your residency is more than just a building or structure.  It is your home (away from home) and Residence Life wants you to enjoy it.  However, since it is your home, you are responsible for maintaining it.  There are some basic and yet simple habits you can develop withi

Appliances

Helpful Tips on Common Appliances

Refrigerator/Freezer:

  • Appliance works best:
    • Do not block vents in the refrigerator or freezer sections. Overfilling and blocking the vents will prevent food from cooling or freezing.
    • Fill with food you are going to use within a 7-day span. Do not overload with food.
    • Adjust the thermostat setting in the middle and not to the highest position. Over freezing and over working units will cause the appliance to stop functioning normally.
