Jesus Gomez of Beardstown, a 2017 graduate of Beardstown High School, has been admitted to the University of Illinois Springfield for Fall Semester 2022 and awarded a $4,000 Lincoln Merit Scholarship for tuition over four years. He plans to major in computer science at UIS.

The scholarship is awarded based on high school GPA and can be renewed for a total of four years if the student maintains college GPA requirements.

鈥淚鈥檓 choosing UIS for the great computer science program, reputation and proximity to home,鈥� he said.

The killing of George Floyd and the state-sanctioned violence by official and non-official law enforcement that followed were not unique instances, nor were they random. These acts were predictable responses given the history of the Criminal Justice system in America.

Halle Stuart enjoys the 鈥渃lose-knit community鈥� at the University of Illinois Springfield. She is a worship leader for the Christian Student Fellowship and is currently interning at Springfield Memorial Hospital in the Marketing-Communications Department assisting with the hospital鈥檚 ongoing rebranding project. She chose UIS because it was close to home. Following graduation, she plans to look for employment in the marketing field.

The University of Illinois Springfield UNI 101 class worked with the Community Voices team in the fall of 2021 to put together podcasts examining Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "Letter From Birmingham Jail" from an ethos, logos and pathos perspective.
