CACREP Program Objectives

The Department of Human Development Counseling fully endorses the standards and objectives adopted by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (). Each concentration area, namely, Clinical Mental Health, School, and Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling is currently accredited under the 2016 CACREP Standards.

Supervised Clinical Experience

The Department of Human Development Counseling offers three separate levels of supervised counseling experience. In HDC 512 Prepracticum students demonstrate their competency with basic skills using classmates and other HDC students as clients. After successfully completing the Prepracticum as well as HDC 501, HDC 511, HDC 513, HDC 515, HDC 546, HDC 575, students are eligible to enroll in HDC 587 Professional Experience: Practicum.

Evaluation and Retention

Evaluation Process

Once each semester the faculty go into executive session and review the performance record of all students enrolled for that semester. Faculty identify students deserving achievement awards and academic honors as well as those students who are experiencing personal or academic difficulties. Advisors will meet with students not making satisfactory academic or personal progress to determine appropriate remedial measures.

The Department of Human Development Counseling is committed to supporting student success. Throughout their time in the program, students have opportunities to work closely with the community through their clinical experience, participation in the counseling honor society and professional organizations, graduate assistantships, and service learning across their curriculum.
