According to W3C, 鈥渃aptions are a text version of the speech and non-speech audio information needed to understand the content.鈥� Captions differ from an audio transcript in that they are synchronized with the audio.

While some parts of the world use the terms 鈥渃aptions鈥� and 鈥渟ubtitles鈥� interchangeably, W3C provides differentiation between these terms as follows:
