The awarding of emerita/emeritus status is a significant honor, typically given at the end of one’s formal institutional career, in recognition of a sustained and distinguished career of teaching, scholarship, and service within the academic community.  The awarding of emerita/emeritus status is not an automatic entitlement, but rather represents the recommendation of one’s department, college, and campus.

Academic sabbaticals represent a period of leave granted by the University of Illinois for the purpose of study, research, or other pursuit in support of academic excellence at the University.  Faculty must qualify in terms of required years of service and have a clear and cogent plan for work to be accomplished during the leave.  Eleven UIS faculty were recommended for sabbatical leave during the 2021-2022 academic year.

Academic tenure is a very rare gift of freedoms and responsibilities entrusted to those who have demonstrated sustained academic and professional performance commensurate with high standards.  It is the first substantial and high-stakes professional challenge, for the burden of proof lies with the candidate – something that all of those here who have been recommended for tenure know well.   In order to be eligible for tenure at the University of Illinois Springfield, candidates must demonstrate and document a clear record of probationary performance

All faculty who achieve tenure and the rank of associate professor have demonstrated and documented a clear record of excellence in teaching and a record of at least high quality in either scholarship or service, with performance in the other category being, at a minimum, satisfactory.

We recognize the recipients of four of our prestigious faculty awards each spring: the Burks Oakley II Distinguished Online Teaching Award, the Faculty Excellence Award, the Pearson Faculty Award, and the Spencer Faculty Service Award. The fifth prestigious faculty award, the University Scholars Award, will be presented in the fall in conjunction with our Faculty Scholarship Recognition.
