How do I know if I have to take a placement test?

Entering students may have to take Math or Reading Placement exams. If you have taken the ACT/SAT and sent UIS your scores this may determine if you can waive one or both placement exam requirements. If you are unclear about what tests you need to take, please contact your advisor. Traditional first-year students contact the Center for Academic Success and Advising (CASA) and Honors students contact the Capital Scholars Honors program.

How do I get help appling for Financial Aid?

How is Financial Aid determined?

Find out more about applying for aid.

I only want to apply for a certificate/licensure program. What application do I submit?

When you start a , under the “Certificate Program or Guest Status” option, make sure you select the Non-Degree Application Type.

I’ve submitted all of my application materials. How long will it be until I receive an admissions decision?

There are many factors that determine when a decision will be made. Those could include when admission committees meet, when we receive a decision from your program of interest, etc. Please continue to check your for updates.

You have received a transcript from my previous school. When will it appear on my application status page and my degree audit?

If your official transcript was sent to us in a sealed envelope by mail, please allow at least one week for delivery to the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS). If it was sent electronically from your previous institution, please allow 1-2 business days. After receipt, please allow 3-5 business days for your records to be updated.

If I drop courses during the semester, how does that impact my financial aid?

Adding or dropping courses can affect your aid eligibility. You should contact a financial aid counselor before adding or dropping courses.

Is financial aid available during the summer?

Yes, financial aid is available during the summer. An undergraduate student must be enrolled in at least half-time (6 credit-hours) to be eligible for Pell grant and Direct loans. For a graduate student they must be enrolled in at least half-time (three credit-hours) to be eligible for Direct loans during the summer semester.

Why is there an adjustment on my MAP grant?

The MAP Grant pays according to the number of enrolled credit hours. Students enrolled in 15 or more credit hours will receive 100% of the MAP Grant award on their financial aid notification. Enrollment below 15 credit hours causes a prorated MAP disbursement. If the number of credit hours changes after the initial disbursement of the MAP Grant, by adding or dropping credit hours, the funds already paid to a student account may be adjusted.

Why did I receive MAP grant last year, but not this year?

Every year ISAC, the state agency that administers the MAP grant Program, determines a FAFSA submission deadline for MAP eligibility. Any student who submits their initial FAFSA after the state MAP deadline will not be eligible to receive it for that upcoming academic year.

The MAP Grant is a need-based award. Financial need is determined using the data submitted on the FAFSA. MAP Grant eligibility is determined by FAFSA information and tuition.

There are limits to MAP Grant eligibility based on grade level and total credit hours. Those details can be found at the bottom of the State Grant page.

The MAP Grant is available only to Illinois residents and/or the dependents of Illinois residents. If a student or their parents (for dependent students) no longer reside in Illinois, they will no longer be eligible for the MAP grant.
